Why a Blog is a Must-Have for Travel Advisors
Before talking about the “how”, let’s talk about the “why”.
You’re probably wondering if blogging is really worth the effort. I mean, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it, right?
Let me tell you, it’s worth it for a bunch of reasons!
A blog increases your visibility. When you have a blog on your site, you have more opportunities for SEO. This means more people find your website when they’re searching for travel-related topics.
It’s a great way to build credibility. Sharing your knowledge establishes you as an expert in the travel industry and helps build trust with potential clients. You're the one who knows about all of those unforgettable experiences. Your blog is a great place to highlight one.
Blogging engages your audience. It gives you a chance to connect with potential clients, answer questions (even the ones they didn’t know they had) and inspire them with travel ideas for their next trip.
A blog invites potential clients to step inside and see what you have to offer. More people browsing your site means more opportunities to convert browsers into leads.
The only time it’s not worth it is if you’re only going to plug in purchased content. Meaning you’ve signed up for a service of some kind that provides you with blog posts (or social media) on a regular basis.
While that may sound appealing, you’re going to be competing with every other travel advisor out there who’s purchased the same content. It’s not a great strategy for your travel business, it’s not worth your time, and it won’t get you where you want to be.
How to Get Started
It’s not hard to get your blog up and running. It just takes a few steps to get there.
Pick a Platform
Some of the most popular options include WordPress, Wix and Squarespace.
We recommend Wix because of its drag-and-drop format and its ease of use for beginners. It’s also the easiest to optimize for SEO. To make it even better, publishing a blog post comes with step-by-step instructions so you don’t forget any key info.
Pick one that’s easy for you to use and integrates with your existing travel agency website.
Define Your Niche
If you don’t already have a niche, it’s important to define it before you start writing. If you don’t, your blog posts won’t give you the additional visibility you’re hoping for.
Focus on a specific audience, travel style, or location. Travel advisors love planning all kinds of trips. And you're the travel expert! From Disney to luxury travel to Africa, family vacations to adventure travel, or destinations like The Caribbean, Italy, etc. You can do anything but not everything. Pick something to focus on.
Don’t worry, your niche can change! You may choose a specialty to start and then narrow it down to a niche with more experience. Or you may decide to completely change your niche down the road.
For now, you just need to start somewhere!
Plan Your First Posts
Brainstorm 5-10 ideas that align with your niche. They could be answers to common questions from clients about a type of travel or destination. Or feature a specific place or type of travel. You give expert advice all the time. Think of how you can turn just one little piece of that into a blog post.
Don’t be too broad with your post ideas. It’s ok to be super specific!
AI tools like ChatGPT can help with brainstorming ideas. Just don’t use ChatGPT to write for you. Your audience wants to hear from YOU, the travel advisor, not AI.
Set Realistic Goals
Consistency matters. Start with a schedule you can manage, like one blog post a month. If you can do more, great!
Draft and Publish
Write your first post. Keep it simple and clear. Focus on providing value to your readers and potential travelers.
It doesn’t need to be epic. Stop second guessing yourself and just publish it.
Content Inspiration
Not sure where to start? Your blog isn't the place to highlight vacation packages. But it could be a great place to highlight an amazing river cruise that you've been on and know your ideal client will love.
Here are some ideas:

Destination Content: Highlight your expertise with posts like “The top family-friendly resort in the Maldives” or “How to travel in Paris like a local”
Travel Tips: Answer common questions with posts like “How to choose the right suitcase for your trip” or “Packing tips for a stress-free cruise”
Seasonal Topics: Write about holiday travel ideas, summer vacation planning, or winter escape destinations like “The best Christmas markets in Cologne” or “The ultimate guide to summer vacation getaways in the Caribbean”
Keep a running list of blog ideas. If you write them down when you have the inspiration, you have a list ready to choose from once you sit down to write your next post.
When you put up a post that has a connection to one that you've already published, be sure to link the related posts so they're easy to find.
Mistakes to Avoid as a New Blogger
Blogging has a learning curve, but you can avoid these common mistakes.
Overloading on topics: Stay focused on your niche to attract the right audience. The goal is to make it easy to find your blog through search engines.
Ignoring SEO: Before you write a blog post, choose the keyword you want to focus on. Use Ubersuggest to get ideas about what keywords are being searched for and how difficult they are to rank for.
It’s easier to decide on your keyword first and write your blog post around it, instead of writing the entire post and realizing no one is searching for the keyword you chose. Or worse, the keyword is so popular that there's little hope of your post being visible in search results.
Inconsistent posting: A sporadic schedule can make your blog look inactive. Consistency is really important.
But also…life happens. If you have to be inconsistent for a time due to life circumstances (we’ve been there too), be as consistent as you can.
Get back on a regular schedule when possible. It’s better to publish posts inconsistently than not publish them at all.
Skipping CTAs (call-to-action): Every post should have a purpose and guide your reader to take a next step. It could be signing up for your email list (a freebie is a great way to do this), reading the next blog post, or contacting you for a consultation. Just don’t forget to tell them what to do next.
The bottom line: Starting your travel advisor blog
Starting your blog doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, it won’t be!
Start with one post. Make it an easier topic and one that you know a lot about. Highlight your favorite travel destination in your niche or specialty. Answer a question that you get asked all the time.
The important thing is to take that first step.
As you build momentum, your blog becomes a powerful tool for growing your business. It’s another way to connect with your audience and showcase your expertise.
So what’s your first topic going to be?
